What are Chemical Peels?

The Obagi Blue Peel is a unique patented system. It contains a low concentration TCA (trichloroacetic acid) and a special blue base to slow the penetration of the acid into the skin. This allows the depth of the peel to be accurately monitored.

The peel removes the thin surface layers of aged and damaged skin, which can then be replaced by healthier ones. This allows the skin’s own clarity and brightness to re-surface.

How does it work?

Many other peels use alpha hydroxy which is a superficial procedure and does not have any effect on the deeper skin layers. TCA is much stronger as it actually does cause a “peel” of the superficial layers to the skin. The procedure takes about 20 mins depending on the number of coats applied – the more coats, the deeper the peel.

During applications you will experience a burning sensation which lasts a few minutes and can be relieved by using a fan to cool the area. Immediately after the procedure, a bluish tint remains on your skin, which usually washes off in 12 to 24 hours.

Are there any side-effects?

After the procedure you will experience light swelling and your skin will begin to peel in 2 to 3 days. This peeling will continue for several days but is usually healed in an average of 7 to 10 days. The extent and length of peeling depends on the number of coats applied.

Is it right for me?

The Obagi Blue Peel should not be used on cut or weeping skin e.g. eczema, cold sores. You should not repeat a deep peel for 6 months although a more superficial peel can be repeated sooner.

For a deep peel, the skin must be “prepared” for 6 weeks before and ideally the same creams should be used afterwards to maintain the effects of the peel. This kind of peel does give fantastic effects but also has “down-time”. Careful consideration and discussion with your doctor is essential.
